Does my Australian Permanent Residency (PR) last forever?

The PR status itself can last forever as long as you remain in Australia and abide by the law. You can stay in Australia for life unless the PR has been cancelled or the travel facility expires while you are overseas. To quote: “Your PR status can stay with you for life if you remain in Australia, and if it has not been cancelled.”

What can expire is the travel facility that comes with it (usually valid for 5 years from the date PR granted).

  • If you’re inside Australia when it expires, nothing happens — you can keep living here as a PR.
  • If you’re overseas when it expires and want to come back as a PR, you’ll need to apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) first.

So:

  • PR = doesn’t expire if you remain in Australia
  • Travel facility = expires

Risks to your PR status:

  • Stranded overseas without PR. Forgetting about your travel facility expiry date, or have had an emergency situation to travel.
  • Committing serious crimes can lead to your PR being cancelled under s501.
  • Lying or providing misleading information, or omitting relevant information on your original visa application can lead to your PR being cancelled under s109 even years later.
