Think of Australian Permanent Residency (PR) as your “lifetime pass” to live and remain in Australia legally without worrying about visa expiry dates or the hassle of reapplying for a visa (provided that you don’t leave Australia!). 

Once you have your PR, you can enjoy many of the same benefits as Australian citizens, such as: 

• Live, work, and study anywhere in Australia without a time limit 

• Access Medicare, Australia’s public healthcare system 

• Travel in and out of Australia freely while your travel facility is valid (usually for 5 years) 

• Apply for Australian citizenship later if you meet the residency requirements 

To put it simply, PR means you can “stay forever without the stress of visa renewals.” While it’s not citizenship yet, it’s the next best thing — giving you almost all the rights that Australian passport holders enjoy, except for a few specific matters.
